Bill Medley Shield 2026                                                 Newsletter 1

                                                                                                                  15 January 2026

Gidday Vets Members,

The 2026 Bill medley Shield kicks off this year at the beautifully unique 6-hole Crescent Head Country Club. As we are only able to take ten players to the event, a team to represent our club has already been nominated.

A Brief History of the Bill Medley Shield

The Bill Medley Shield commenced in 1982 due to one bloke named Bill Medley, a member of Kew Country Club who over a few beers with mates decided it was a good time to foster relationships with other local clubs. Port Macquarie, Kempsey and Wauchope were the inaugural clubs invited.

Many believed the shield was named after that great baritone singer of his time, Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers, who were responsible for classics such as “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and “I’ve Had the Time of my Life”. This is a FURPHY!

The Bill Medley Shield is a perpetual interclub golf trophy contested by veteran golfers aged over 55 in the NSW Mid‑North Coast region. The competition is conducted under the auspices of the NSW Veterans Golf Association and involves 8 clubs from Group 12.

The Shield is decided through a season‑long, points‑based format, with multiple rounds played at each participating Club throughout the year. Results from each round contribute to the overall standings, with the leading club awarded the Bill Medley Shield at season’s end.

The competition has a long and proud history and is regarded as one of the most coveted prizes among veteran golfers on the Mid‑North Coast. It is strongly associated with sportsmanship, competitive excellence, and regional camaraderie.

During its running PMGC struggled in the early years, having to wait until the period 2010 to 2020 to claim victory. In nine years under the tactical leadership of Maurie Ferry, PMGC brought home four shields. Throughout this period, we had an average participation rate of 30 players, contributing to our success.

As with most clubs and events in our region, interest waned through the early 2020’s with covid, floods, bushfires and more floods.

2026 is the right time for PMGC Vets members to make a concerted effort to put our Club back where it rightfully belongs, on the top as the premier club of our Group 12 region.

Our Ladies’ and Men’s Pennants Teams continue to perform outstandingly for our Club with our Juniors consistently shining.

It is now the Vets’ opportunity to step forward and demonstrate to the Club and all its members that we are a successful, welcoming, and competitive team, proudly contributing to the strength of our wonderful Club.

Please Vets Members, get behind your Club and nominate to be part of our efforts to take back the Bill Medley Shield this year. All male Vets members are eligible.
